 All I want to do is change the whole of the blue "Crosshatch" banner (not just edit logo.psd) and put one of my own in.

Is there an easy way to do this?

 Editing the whole theme.php file - that is the only way. If you know how to do this, than do it, but we can't provide such kind of support.
