I tried to incorporate a hyperlink for the images. I added a field in the fbox tables called 'fbox_link' then added a short code

SC_BEGIN FBOX_LINK
$fbox_item = getcachedvars('fbox_cdata');
return $fbox_item['fbox_link'];
SC_END

to the fbox_batch.php file, then added

<a href="{FBOX_LINK}" {FBOX_IMG}</a>

to the template file. it worked in firefox, but breaks down in internet explorer. what am I doing wrong?

how else can I make the image a hyperlink to a page?

this is wrong . try like this:
<a href="{FBOX_LINK}">{FBOX_IMG}</a>

I tried the above code and it fixed the formatting problem (duh!) but now in IE, while the scroller works correctly, you have to right click on the link as opposed to the image being a hyperlink like it is in Firefox. So IE has the link, but you can't just click on it.

I think it's some sort of XHTML/CSS problem. It's the common case when you work with relative positions. Try to colorize your containers (e.g. div elements) to see if there is a div on the top of your link.
