 Any ideas why this would be? when I click the picture description the picture comes up fine.

 Could be anything - for example missing GD and imageMagic is one good reason

 I don't have imagemagick but I do have GD2.

I did a server check and this came up.

magic_quotes_gpc: TRUE TRUE This setting is bad. Turn it off, if possible. phpThumb will attempt to work around it if it is enabled.

Could this be the problem? And if so, how do I turn that off?

 It's your PHP server setting, it belongs to php.ini. Ask your server support for help (usually there are several ways to disable it).
